Original artwork is more personal than a photograph and makes an unique gift. Giving or receiving a work of art is an exciting way of remembering a special person or event. I am happy to undertake commissions for portraits, pets, or botanical work in pastel, pastel pencil, coloured pencil, and watercolour. To view more artwork, please visit the Galleries on the website.
Biography: LOCATION I am currently based in Norwich, Norfolk, although originally born and bred in the northwest of England. BACKGROUND AND INSPIRATION I grew up beside Pendle Hill in Lancashire, and was intrigued by the ancient mythology associated with this area. Tales of witches, magic and moorland mysteries hinted at a dark, hidden side to life. This 'romantic' sensibility of spirit in nature infiltrates my work, resulting in a darkly dramatic emphasis. I prefer to capture more than a superficial or flattering portrait of someone. I enjoy drawing babies, children, and adults, of all ages, ethnic and religious backgrounds. There is something primeval about seeing a face emerge from a blank page. Each person has their own unique combination of character, colour, light, and spirit, to capture. ARTISTIC INFLUENCES At Settle High School, North Yorkshire, I was encouraged and inspired by two wonderful art teachers, Mr Glanville and Mr Edward Healey. (If anyone has news of them, please do get in touch!) Some other artists who have inspired me are: Holbein, da Vinci, van Gogh, Monet, Rossetti, Millais, M?nch, D?rer, Breughel, Munnings, and countless recent or contemporary artists. OTHER INTERESTS I also enjoy botanical painting. I am very happy to undertake commissions in this area. Julie Burgess
