Biography: Elena Nicol EDUCATION 1987 – 1991: Graduated from the University with BA in Graphic Design. Elena’s thesis, “Comics as Mass Media”, is a deep semiotic study into the history, character and graphic language of this resource used as a powerful communication tool. This work is an introduction to the general public and comic fan alike into the complexity of the Ninth Art’s non-verbal communication. 1985 -1986: Studied Egyptian History & History of Egyptian Art at the School of High Egyptology Studies. 1982 – 1984: College Graduate in Art and Humane Studies. (History of art, Art, World Literature, History of Literature, Philosophy, History of Philosophy, History of Music, Geography, General History, etc) 1982 - 1983: Attended workshops of Aesthetic Expression, Art and Photography at the Rufino Tamayo Modern Art Museum, Mexico City. 1980 – 1982: High School Graduate OTHER STUDIES include: • In teaching: 1. She lectured on art related subjects such as: Egyptian Art, Medieval Art, History of Religion and Philosophy, and others. 1994 – 2005 Lecturer Elena’s main activities included: Tutoring students, develop new and update the old curriculum, manage the student/teacher liaisons and do promotion work for the art curses, being marketing adviser for the school, helped in the developing of events and sponsorships. As lecturer & teacher, her main activities included the creation and delivery of courses. She lectured on: History of Design, History of art, History of furniture and interior design, History of Design, human figure drawing, airbrush technique, colour theory, illustration, semiotics, visual design, visual communication and comic & manga drawing. 2007 to date Member of Dundee’s art society, Elena’s main activities include: the creation and delivery of lectures and workshops. She lectured on art related subjects such as: Mexican Art, and Colour Theory as well as participating with the exhibition of her work. 1990 – to date: Freelance artist, illustrator and designer. Main duties: Create illustration for children’s books and other projects such as comics and manga including script and character design, also designed logos, book and album covers, product label and corporate image. Design for racing cars in formula 2, specifically advertising areas and team image.Design for magazines and fanzines comic strips including script and character design, album and book covers Interests: Most of the time is reading, studying and doing research. Enjoys cooking and is an enology enthusiast. Loves travelling and learning about other cultures: their ethnicity, philosophy, language and history. Likes doing exercise in the gym and is trained in fencing and archery.
