Natural wonder and intrigue touch Carmen Labbé’s world. With a background in the theatre, fashion design, and writing, Labbé paints to the stage of her canvas with dreamlike and mystical figuration. Carmen uses a breadth of materials to build the surreal lighting effects of her intimate and magical spaces. “I have always been fascinated by the transformation that occurs on a person, place, or object by the mere effect of light,” says Labbé. The challenge of depicting reflected light and phenomena of its elusive beauty lead Labbé to experiment with unique reflective materials on her surface. As a world traveler, she is acutely aware of diverse viewpoints and commonalities of cultural aesthetics. Labbé’s point of view is wide and encompasses lands, light, and symbolism from around the globe. Never content to be stylistically confined, she is constantly moving forward, exploring techniques and materials.
