My current work is mainly about the roles of women, particularly in advertising. I wanted to explore some of the roles that women have, positive and negative, and one way that I have been doing that is through the theme “sex sells.” I think that using female sexuality is an interesting and delicate topic because it can be used to objectify women and it can also be empowering. I am incorporating pin-up and advertising imagery from the 1940’s, texture and pattern, and collage in some of my works. I am doing many works on things like shower curtains and tablecloths that I have stretched onto stretcher bars. I think that these materials are useful because they are more interesting than traditional canvas, and they lend themselves to the work because they are used in the domestic setting of the home. The work that I have been doing developed from an interest in body image and cosmetics, because there is such an emphasis on beauty in our society. I have done work in many different mediums, but the area that I would like to concentrate on is painting, although I do think it would be interesting to combine printmaking,digital art, and or sculpture with my work.
Biography: I just got into the M.A. program at Eastern Illinois University. I want to get my Master of Arts because I would like to further progress my body of work and I have always had an interest in teaching art, which will be more of a possibility when I have a Master’s degree. I would love to get my M.F.A. as well , but I know that I need to develop my body of work in a Master of Arts program first.
