The painting's are about the big universal topics; death, sex and a bit of art history for good measure. The images I make are based on images of people, but that's it, they're images of images, I'm not a portrait painter. They're more abstract landscapes really in the way I approach painting them, they just originate from images of the human form. The source material comes from the mass media; the internet, magazines, newspapers, DVDs. I like the contrast of the ephemeral fast moving sources with the laborious and contemplative process of painting. More recent works have very much focused on death. Not so much death itself, as in the act of dying, but the lead up to it. The inevitable decay. So I guess it's about how we come to terms with dying, or not thinking about it too much, in an environment where we're saturated by images of death through the media. Since last year a lot of paintings have been based on photographs of dead bodies i've found online. I like the challenge of trying to take an ugly violent image and turn it into something that, at least on the surface, is beautiful. I sometimes make collages, or just use an image straight as a basis of a painting. I've got a projector which I can use to sample imagery, get it onto a board and start to play with it. Often things change halfway through the process of painting, have bits added or taken away. I like to use a variety of paints, oils and household gloss, but also some acrylic and some inks that I use through an airbrush. Influences include artists such as Sigmar Polke, Maurice Cockrill, Francis Bacon, Robert Rauschenberg and Stephen Farthing. As well as graphic designers and artists such as Alan Forbes and Frank Kozik.
