CONTEMPORARY FUNCTIONAL WARE FOR THE MODERN LIVING SPACE Stephen specialises in thrown porcelain and earthenware forms combined with the latest digital transfer technology to realise his visual ideas. Stephen takes found images and his own quickly drawn sketches and text which are then combined and re-worked digitally. Childhood memories and wider social comment provide the inspiration for these images with a quirky humour running through many (if not all) of them. A liking for graphic imagery from the 40's and 50's, in advertising and beyond, inform many of his ceramic surfaces and also influence the forms. Functional ceramics with an eye on 21st Century approaches. "It is impossible to ignore the popular culture which has surrounded us for decades and I try to take traditional ceramic forms, such as the teapot, and combine it with a slightly kitsch image and humorous text. A contemporary twist on an old tradition." In addition to producing his pieces of imagery and text, a stylish range of black tableware provides a complimentary contrast. Stephen's work can increasingly be found in outlets across the uk and he is also a member of Designed and Made, the North East based collective of designers and makers.
