The world is my oyster as my origins include many nationalities: my mother is Caribbean, my grandmother is Chinese, my father, Polish and I was born on the French/German border in Alsace-Lorraine.
Metaphysical knowledge and life aesthetic have always been important to me, so after studying Latin, Philosophy and Languages at college, Great Britain seemed the perfect place to further accomplish awareness to my artistic ability and to expand my consciousness. I settled in England ten years ago and now work from my studio based at home in Belsize Park, London.
As a self-taught artist/painter, I have achieved an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, illustrations, murals and design works. Although my style is varied, my paintings exude fantasy while being richly steeped in ancient tales and futuristic symbolism. Undeniably my art is inspired by the Raphaelite, Surrealist, and Pop art styles.
The immediate effect found in my work is the illusion of space and depth; in addition the vibrant colour mixes are shaped through pure lines and acute angles so that the whole composition is depicted with visual truth. The colours are a key element as they give a pervasive feeling and cause visual sensation. (That’s what I call getting high on life!)
On observation my work is highly detailed and influenced by Old masters techniques such as the ones used by Renaissance artists. I look back to classical forms in my quest for beauty and aesthetic. For instance I start a composition using perceptual drawing or the acute observation of Mother Nature, and then build it from there.
I use media according to their properties or my mood, and I tend to choose the best quality materials including oils, watercolours, acrylics, inks, and pastels. However I have experienced with the use of natural, organic pigments such as beetroot and tea dye achieving great results.
I became a member of The Heath and Hampstead Society and The Woodland Trust in order to contribute to the protection of our environment and also to learn more about the fauna and flora of England, thus gaining a deeper understanding of what it’s made of. A major part of my collection is titled Carnet de Botanique (Botanical dairy) and depicts plants, flowers and foliage encountered during my travelling and daily life.
The other collections are focused on Fantasy, Surrealism and Pop Art. Sometimes a painting will contain elements of each, particularly murals that are stimulating and liberating, I have painted a few and I always welcome a new challenge (give me a church ceiling anytime!)
I have also put my imaginative skills to challenging art projects. In 2000 I exhibited my work alongside abstract artist Soheila Keyani (www.shirzan.com) at Roupel Street Contemporary Art Gallery on the South bank, London. By 2001 I was appointed creative director of independent dance music label, Sola Music. Whilst developing the artistic image of Eva Luna (www.evaluna.biz) I designed logos, visual material and the marketing content such as press packs and CD sleeves. The experience gained enabled me to enter the digital world of Photoshop and Publisher amongst other programs. I have since put together presentation packages for artist of various musical backgrounds such as Rock, Jazz and Drum & Bass.
The paintings I produce are sold on the basis of commission and word of mouth. My work is collected privately to accommodate Germany, France and Ibiza, Spain so far.
As an artist, I feel the need to respond to all the components of my visual environment in order to understand the complexities of our surrounding aesthetics and to appreciate life as a whole. Jean Anouihl said “the object of life is to give life a shape” and that’s exactly what I am doing, which I open for all to visually enjoy.
