Artist Statement/ Jo Dawkins I have been genuinely influenced by the people in my life that created mechanisms for me to do art. I feel that I tell the story of my life in a visual frame. I create images often peaceful because I fine a pleasure in peace. The acrylic pieces that I have just created are simple images of color. I feel I am greatly influenced by the cubist as well as the expressionist. I feel that acrylic as well as oil are great mediums to work out of for creative expression. My work is speaking when I can’t and the line is the most flexible and defined means. My work means that color is good. The pieces presented are textured so as to developed form better. Art is an unending measure we espouse.
Biography: Jo Dawkins I live and work in Detroit, Michigan. A graduate of Wayne State University. I am a poet and self taught artist. I have worked as teacher, fundraiser, and chef I have enjoyed the art classes that I have been fortunate enough to be accepted in. In these first pieces of art I used color and texture. I have focused mainly on texture the acrylic pieces were a special work because I love the paint. In them I have attempted to develop form as each shape becomes its own manifestation. The Cass Corridor community nurtured my love of art and helped me find a sense of maturity for which I am very grateful. I lived and worked at Wayne State University and feel apart of the fabric which it filters out to the world. I love working with children and I love art. The Detroit poets influenced my writing tremendously I am a Broadside Press Cavalcade Winner 1999 for “ The Blue Man.” I feel my life is acceptable as a creative artist. I feel that the community has supported and educated me in the most difficult of times. My writing and art gives me a sense of completion.
