Biography: Alfred Thomas is a Cornishman who lived and worked in his beloved Cornwall until May 2000, when he moved to York, before moving to Leeds in Sept 2001, and ever onwards to Edinburgh in 2005. He has dabbled with paints for as long as he can remember but never thought of "art" as a career he might follow. As a result he is almost entirely self-taught.
After a basic education he left school, with minimal qualifications, and drifted from one dead end job to another for the next fourteen years. When a period of unemployment gave him the opportunity to stand back and take stock, he used this opportunity to wander the countryside, sketching and painting the landscapes he saw with the advice and encouragement of local artists. After about eighteen months a local gallery owner showed an interest in his paintings and offered to hang a few of them. When the paintings sold within three weeks and he was asked for more it dawned on Alf that perhaps he had, at last, stumbled on the possibility of a career with job satisfaction. He has been painting, and selling his work, ever since.
In seeking an answer to the question "why do I paint?" which was more satisfactory than "Because I enjoy it!", he embarked on a course of study which culminated in a BA Hons, in Humanities, from the Open University. Far from providing answers Alf says this has simply led to more questions. He continues to seek to answer them through reading; studying the work of painters as varied as the masters of the Fifteenth Century, the Impressionists, Picasso and Dali; his own painting; and more recently becoming immersed in reading extensively on Aesthetics.
Alf's preferred medium is oil, although he has recently been converted to acrylics, and his subjects are inspired by the varied landscapes which surround him. Recently, he has become enamoured of industrial landscapes: not the general run down Victorian industrial buildings, but the more modern structures like power stations and chemical plants. He finds the patterns and shapes created by the light on these subjects fascinating, almost as much as he finds the buildings themselves to be things of beauty.
His move from Cornwall was partly inspired by a desire to spend some time following in the footsteps of Turner painting some of the scenes, that feature in his paintings and sketchbooks, as they are today. Alf has a fascination with light, pattern and atmosphere which is clear in his work. His past work was chiefly inspired by the coasts and countryside of his native Cornwall. Now he is drawing on the rivers, towns, villages and countryside in and around Yorkshire to produce a new body of work which demonstrates clearly the direction in which his work is developing.
