As a child I was obsessed with creating patterns. These were affectionately referred to by my family as my 'doodles’. Art College in the early 1970’s knocked some of the ‘doodle’ out of me for a time, as I became far more interested in life drawing and painting but, as the course also included very intensive fabric design production, my interest in patterns was also kept very much alive.
Living in Cornwall during the 70’s and 80’s my interest in photography drew me into landscape painting and I produce a considerable number of paintings in gouache covering, almost exclusively, subjects in about half a square mile of the Trevone Bay area. My interest in painting landscapes has fallen off to some extent since I left Cornwall and returned to Warwickshire but does stilll continue.
My interest in pattern was strengthened by an interest in Islamic Art and later, having returned to Warwickshire in the late 80’s, was further inspired by journeys in Morocco and to India. At this point I began working mostly with acrylics. In some paintings I combine my interests in working from life by introducing elements of pattern into the composition.
I am now beginning a new series of paintings in acrylics or pastel (or both) and the occasional collage. These are, and will be, mostly based on notes I have kept in a dream journal over several years and also some autobiographical subjects which have been ‘brewing’ for some time. I have also visited Poland fairly recently but I think that possible influence has yet to seep through.
And of course I still love to doodle!
I have exhibited and sold my work in Warwickshire and Cornwall. Prior to 1996 I exhibited under the name Alison Gouedard.
