Mr. Mackie's painting,Auntie, can be seen in Spike Lee's movie,She's Gotta Have It,. In 1989,filmmaker Brent Hill selected Mr. Mackie to be one of five central characters in his documentary,Dancing on Pearls. Mr. mackie has also designed promotinal materials for the Boys choir of Harlem. Noted writer and editor Joseph Beam selected Mr. Mackie to design the cover for his book,In th Life. In cooperstown,NY,The Baseball Hall of Fame exhibits Mr. Mackie's portrait of Negro Baseball pitcher Smokey Joe williams.
Deryl Mackie's work has been described as stylized portraiture. His"personae," as he likes to call them, are musicians, chefs, laborers, dancers and members of the demimonde, caught in graceful and revealing moments, mid-motin. the move, they dance, the pose, perform-and react. An important body of work, The Jealousy Series, deals with this emotion's many manifestations. They are archetypes, universal and expressive-images that please, tease and provoke.
