I am a mixed media abstract artist creating contemporary art in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
Biography: Please see my ebsite for up to date information, art work and ehibitions etc.
I started my artistic training whilst at school, studying for a GCSE in Photography Art. When I moved to the north east of England I returned to college as a mature student and studied AS Levels in both Fine Art and Textiles. I then went on to complete and achieve a Distinction in an Art and Design Foundation course. This led me on to study for a Diploma in Higher Education in Textiles & Surface Design at Cleveland College of Art and Design. To complement my practical studies, I studied at the same time with the Open University gaining a BA(Honours) Degree in Art History & Theory, specialising in Modern Art Theory & Renaissance Art & Architecture. I have also taught Art and Textiles part time in several comprehensive schools in the North East of England. I also took part in Big Arts Week Wales 2006, working on a variety of projects with the children of Mary Immaculate School in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire and have returned to assist the school with other art projects since then. Each week I help out at Rosemarket's Young Crafters group, helping my village's children to become inspired by art and crafts, as well as providing them with a stimulating environment for them to have fun in. I enjoy teaching art just as much as I do creating it, I like seeing the children getting involved with their art, exploring the new painting techniques, and being proud of what they produce.
Unlike many artists with a background in textiles, I do not look at interior and fashion magazines for trends to inspire my work. This is simply because trends come and go nearly as quickly as they are conceived.
I believe that art should be timeless and not concerned whether it is in vogue or not. Just because the colours used are not "in" this season doesn't mean the art work is not very good or be appreciated for what it is. At the end of the day, if a person likes a specific piece of art then I believe that is all that matters.
My work is mainly created on stretched canvases and paper. I use many different types of media in each painting ranging from fabrics, hand made papers, acrylics, inks and dyes etc. Much of my art is spontaneous, gestural, concerned with bold mark making and exploring the different properties of each medium. I don't have any specific ideas or concept in mind when I do start a lot of my work, but after the first mark has been made I seem to know where to go, bringing my moods, memories and recent experiences to bear upon my work. Other paintings of mine are the result of many weeks of work and research, as well as the filling up of many sketchbooks with drawings, colours and notes to use as inspiration! From Marilyn Manson, to dance music to even a bit country & western nearly all paintings I make are created whilst listening to music, to help me express what I want in each painting. To me, painting is a very emotional and spiritual process, allowing myself to explore feelings, ideas and colours, whilst creating something unique and pleasing to look at. I sometimes use paintbrushes but I do find these restrictive, and I prefer to use the freedom of my fingers to apply the paint, or even just apply it straight from the tube! Almost all of my art is abstract thus allowing each spectator to see in it what they themselves want.
My art can be seen in various galleries which include: The Waterfront Gallery in Milford Haven, The Blue Ball Restaurant in Tenby, Gallery 54 in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, and in numerous on-line art galleries. Exhibitions to date include: The Mayor of Darlington's annual ball, the Myles Meehan Gallery, the Town Hall Gallery, The Dolphin Centre, and The Mayor’s Chamber, all in Darlington, County Durham, The Small Gallery, Carmarthen, ing Street Gallery, Carmarthen, The Narberth Gallery in Narberth, The Brownston Gallery, in Modbury, Devon, Milford Haven Town Hall, Milford Haven Library, Pembroke Dock Library Gallery, Bewdley Gateway Exhibition, Worcestershire, The Torch Theatre in Milford Haven, and The Mid Wales Open Art Exhibition in Ceredigion.
