Self taught; Jose embarks in this craft as a uplifting tool with the purpose of healing the murkiness of existence; concurrently, this contribution is an attempt to arrange a shift in perception. It is through this medium that he can facilitate his intention.
He shares his perspective on light, mystery, and awareness with only one expectation: to provoke the viewer; being pure awareness, art is created as the viewer perceives. Only then, will there be genuine communication.
All surfaces are recycled post boards discarded from print shops and frame shops. Giving this discarded material a second opportunity is a reaffirmation that life gives us more than one path, I want to believe all survivors are proof of this conviction.
Biography: Jose Alfredo Trevino is born in a border town in the American Southwest. He is raised in the Mexican border town of Cd. Juarez where the hopes for the illusory “American Dream” are broken by the reality in crossing the Rio Grand. It is among the tragedy, resilience that he immerses himself in a world of obscurity. He incurs at a very early age in the arts as a way to mitigate the fear, and confusion of his cultural identity and aspirations.
A trip to Mexico City in 1980 when he is 13 years old, transforms his appreciation for the visual arts. Viewing the great murals of David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, and Jose Clememte Orozco, not to mention the trip to the museum of natural history with their Pre-colombian frescos, the landscape of Tlaxcala and its volcanoes and the Templo Mayor ruins awakens a sense of belonging never experienced before.
Nonetheless, he engages in self-destructive behavior, which in some ways is a rite of passage into adulthood in that part of the world. He confronts gang violence head on and he is harassed and assaulted for not succumbing to the wave of gang indoctrination that sweeps northern Mexico in the early 80s. He self-exiles from that violent scene and enrolls in the high school Lydia Patterson Institute, under a work-study program in the US. After 4 years of crossing the international bridge to work and study in the US while living in Mexico, he obtains a tuition scholarship for Mc Murry University. It is at this point; where he finds himself drawn to self express his experiences. In 1985 A title to a therapeutic expression in the Abnormal Psychology books called Art Brut triggers a need to alleviate all those feelings buried for so long. (Art Brut literally translates as "Raw Art" or "Rough Art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet, to describe art created outside the boundaries of "official culture"; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane asylum inmates. Some critics also call it naive art, or outside art. He starts using this medium as therapy to exorcise his demons.
It was this annotation that set him back in this self healing path, to distract and dispute the self loathing questions of the entire "isms" and the resilience of the human spirit. He received two bachelors of art in Psychology and Sociology from that Texan University. He returns to his hometown after University for several years where he delves further into his roots; being a Mestizo (White and Native American) he encounters Native American spirituality and magic with the help of men of knowledge. They cajoled him to open an alternate reality parallel to this one; he arrives at a different cognitive structure of awareness.
It is in San Francisco California where a series of steps (Tensegrity, Clairvoyant school [Psychic horizons] and meditation) takes him to the presence of Adi Parashakti transmission (The original, primordial, vast, womb-energy of the universe) through the avatar David Spero. It is under this energy that the work has been reinforced into a healing tool for any viewer; he intends to bring further in the art work this energy being felt and retransmit its healing properties to the viewer.
He has led workshops for recovery addicts and or survivors since 2001. He currently lives in San Francisco California, where he is a successful Methadone Treatment Counselor in the Westside Community Mental Health Center.
