I am currently in the process of creating an independent major at Messiah College for Commercial Photography, but because we have such limited classes here I am extremely interested in the program at Cheltenham. I am especially interested in classes such as Commercial and Advertising Photography; Conventions and History of Lens Based Media; People Photography; Professional Practice-working towards a career in the media; and possibly Design Production Techniques. I am extremely interested in combining photography with media and have taken many communications and business classes such as Mass Media in Society; Media in Everyday life; Moral Issues in Business and next fall I will be taking Marketing Principles; Communications Theory; Graphic Design; and if the art department allows, Color and Design.
I am currently struggling with how exactly I can incorporate photography into advertising and the media as a Christian. I have a difficult time promoting the digital manipulation of models, however, photographing people is one of my greatest passions. I hope that by attending these classes in Cheltenham I will be able to gain a better understanding of where I can best use my photography as well as become more and more literate in every aspect of photography. Thank you for taking the time to look over my portfolio and information, I hope that I can contribute in any way possible to your program in the Spring semester of 2006.
Biography: Since the age of fourteen, I have had a passion for photography. In high school I took classes in and out of school. During my senior year I took an internship with a professional wedding photographer who gave me instructions for studio photography as well as helped me to enhance some of my basic skills. In those years I learned the basic processes of using my camera and developing film and pictures in black and white. I brought to college a strong foundation of how to operate a manual SLR camera as well as the use of filters in the darkroom, dodging and burning, and an understanding of the chemicals involved in developing film and pictures. As a sophomore in college, I have taken an introduction to photography as well as a second level photography, two of the three photography courses that are offered here at Messiah. Here I have gone far beyond my basic knowledge gained from high school. In my introductory class I learned the processes of toning, hand coloring photographs and capturing motion. We were assigned projects in which we explored our abstract vision, the use of light, portraiture, night photography, motion and sequence photography. Each of these assignments strengthened my vision as a photographer and helped me to continue to refine my darkroom techniques. The second level photography has introduced me to the zone system, the use of different cameras such as the Holga, the use of fiber paper and has encouraged me to find my own artistic eye.
