Biography: born Glasgow. 1951 started drawing at the age of six, at age 15.years old painted a large mural for school Sir John Stirling Maxwell. Left Glasgow on 17th birthday to live and work in London. Read book on the life of A. Rodin the French sculptor and was so inspired by his free alive moving work Balzac, John the baptist The Kiss to name but a few of his works, his flowing sketches of the Russian bali Nijinsky etc, he took up sculpture, working in clay he soon mastered the material and began toproduce many powerful sculptures casting them in plaster of paris, from the clay originals. At this time aged18yrs, old James was self taught studing Rodin and other artist work learning from the masters visiting the Museums and galleries of London. Some years later in 1975 he met and discussed art and life with Francis Bacon while living and working in South Kensington, they both signed a quote in a book by Max Ernst that James was studying at the time. " If an artist ever finds himself he is lost" We were rather the worse for wear that afternoon in a pub in Kensington.. to be continued..!!!
