Welcome to my online art portfolio. In last 10 years I have worked in three diverse and typically un-connected occupations. They have been shore-based Marine Wildlife Tourism, Offshore Expedition Travel, and Commercial Art Design and Production. Each required much travel and exposure to diverse culture has formative in my artistic style. For me, those three endeavors are now combining form an artist influenced by the wildlife, people and creativity of Pacific Ocean.
Biography: A north-westerner by birth, I was born in Oregon and moved to Ketchikan, Alaska at the age of 7. In, my early teens, I fished commercially for salmon, cod and halibut. In school I always gravitated to the arts and for a year studied traditional Tlingit (SE Alaska native) carving. Other courses in drawing and painting were instructive. Even in the remote fishing port of Dutch Harbor, art was a big part of my life. There I learned block and press printing techniques with Caroline Reed, the celebrated illustrator and printer. Always, I kept a sketchbook with me, throughout five years of travel in the southern hemisphere. Art has been always in kept in my life especially while inspiring travel to places like Antarctica and a continued casual apprenticeship with talented artists I have met along the way.
While working in the expedition travel market, I learned how to write copy and produce daily newspapers. I compiled and wrote several large journals published with photos and graphics for post cruise delivery. At the Department of Archaeology in the museum I made a worked on a of In the last five years, I co-founded a graphic art and wine bottle engraving business. Serving over one hundred Winery clients with over sized engraved bottles paper label design and other custom marketing materials. J&H Design Company Inc., which sold to a larger similar marketing company was a great success but left me missing the sea.
A return to Victoria in 2003 sparked a return to operating marine wildlife viewing vessels in the summer months and serving the marketing needs of whale watching companies and wineries the rest of the year.
