Annet Wood About my artwork…. I am a self-trained artist; no art college has crossed my path. I have had private lessons by several (international) artists for techniques. I did not start artwork until I was 36 years old. Therefore I feel as a young artist. My very first sculpture was a rhino in bronze; I treasure it though it was in all ways a great failure. From that first sculpture I have grown into an artist who produces her work in many different materials. The model of the sculpture, the creation of the work carries the spirit The material gives it an additional value. Glass, it gives the vulnerability of mankind, Wood gives the possibility of moving and growing, bronze the strength, stone the ancient power, silver the value and paper the transitorily. In regular, I do make torsos but at periods I do make animals and sometimes an abstract work. The female torso is my best friend. I do make them again, again and again. I was born in the village Berkhout, just 1 minute away from the place I live with my husband Willis. At the age of 15 I left school and started to work as a postmistress in the post office. I left that office after 22 years as a secretary. I was fed-up with that work and walk out. Then I started to work for the gas board. Reading meters, walking from door to door. This was a part-time job and during the time I decided to do a workshop bronze casting lost wax. That workshop has changed my live totally. I walked into the work of art and finally I felt myself at home. This was the work I had long been waiting for. I had to practice myself and I had to work hard to develop my skill. But always I had my husband Willis aside to assist me, he is the person that’s does all the labor like molding, casting, cleaning and shifting. We call ourselves an Arts and Craft couple. Now, I am 51 years old, I have a fulltime job on creating my work and train people in stone carving, woodcarving, paper art or felt art. I am most happy once I can create new work or discusses new ways of working with Willis. Never sit down, always explore new ways.
