Solo show: SAFARI AMERICANA: SCENES OF DELIGHT
Jun 21 - Jul 18, 2008 @ Gallery 825
ARTIST STATEMENT:
In SAFARI AMERICANA: SCENES OF DELIGHT, I wanted to explore our relationship with animals and examine our need for them.
Why do we want animals to be our companions?
When do we fear them?
How do we feel about them in the wild?
Why must we extract them from their environment
to heighten our own?
What do they symbolize?
What do they say about us?
In my travels, I have encountered many scenes revealing our affinity for animals. We humanize them, adorn them, and use them as symbols for our businesses. I want to explore this instinct of ours, a strange impulse to connect with, or show dominion over, our fictitious animal friends. What is our animal-impulse?
From my road trips, I have collected images of iconic animals that have taken a firm root in my memories. I created these photographs using toy cameras with experimental techniques, including cross-processing, light leaks, pushed colors, expired film, and custom printing to capture my memories with a sense of play and discovery. Whether the animals are real, or synthetically created for a greater symbolic purpose, the moment of communion is real, and it has been captured to express my feelings from encountering these animals in the moment.
It is my great pleasure to share my delight with you.
Artist Influences: Gerhard Richter, Mona Kuhn, Jeff Koons
ARTIST STATEMENT : DIFFUSIONS
Culture and Identity have always been important to me. A first generation American and Los Angeles native, I grew up in a multi-cultural environment, which increased my sensitivity to cultural landscapes. My goal is to paint a picture of my personal story and perceptions. I push colors to express my experience of a moment, whether it is to express a feeling or my delight in the American landscape.
ABOUT DIFFUSIONS: A COLLECTION OF ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHS
In the darkest dark, if you stay open, beauty will be revealed to you. So much emphasis is placed on how we want to things to be, it is refreshing to be able to see what actually is and capture it in the moment. By challenging my camera with low light environments I have been peering into the dark and it has been peering back.
