My painting style can best be described as romantic abstraction or romantic symbolic abstraction. The word “romantic” can be defined as a fusion of parts which emphasizes the infinite and nuances of feeling and mood in the psychological realm. There is a spiritually based meaning to most of my work. My work starts with intuitive planning, and is built up step by step using the controlled unexpected events that occur to enhance the message. I do oil paintings, watercolor and mixed media paintings. My formal training at Eastern Michigan was in both oils and watercolors. Much of my painting is done on heavy rag paper in mixed media and/or collage. I use whatever processes or materials that intuitively occur to me as I work on each piece to enhance the creative statement. My jewelry, metal work and sculpture is first drawn and planned out, then often changes as I work on it. Some of the jewelry is commisioned and I use the ideas and materials preferred by my client and put my own design spin on the final product.
Biography: Patricia Atencio was born in Los Angeles, and grew up in Detroit, MI where she started creating art as a child. Her education in art includes classes at The Center for Creative Studies, a premier art college in Detroit, in jewelry design and production, with a subsequent job as a jeweler. She also took classes in the graphic arts while working in that field for 15 years. Ms. Atencio later earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University with a concentration in painting, along with an Art Teaching Certification. She has been an art educator in the Detroit Public School System and in adult art classes. She studied additional jewelry and metal arts techniques at Wayne State University and in various workshops. She moved to San Diego, CA in 1996 where she has focussed on her career as a fine artist in painting and jewelry design. She has exhibited her art in shows and galleries in Michigan and California. She promotes and sells her work on-line, at times through on-line auctions such as eBay and Art By Us. Her work is also shown and sold in galleries and shows.
