What is art? What defines art? Who decides what art is, and does art have to be beautiful? Why do we label things as art, and not by other names such as a creation, an expression, a beautification, a view, an environment, or a gaze? As an artist, I ask the questions that I need to ask about my art, and how art relates to me.
The license with which we create amazes me. With little or no reverence for the act of art making we create endless amounts of 'stuff'. To me, art-making is a process, some people call it life, others call it research, some say that it is dying. I say that art-making is about a point of beginning and a point of never-ending. I may begin by thinking about an idea, researching it, mulling it over, creating it, showing it, talking about it, and listening to what others have to say about it. The interesting thing with this theory is that I wasn't the person who began the idea that I worked with, I drew it from somewhere outside of me, and after my work is completed, other people will draw their ideas from it too. That is why art-making has a point of beginning without an end.
I would find it next to impossible to try to give up the act of making art. For me, it is a voice with which my ideas will speak to others, and especially myself. The process of art-making is rather illogical for me. I make art, not always from ideas that I understand before I make the art, but then after I have spent some time looking at my work I actually begin to understand my ideas. The breadth of knowledge that I can acquire from my work is far beyond my understanding.
