My work is a visual link between the physicality and the personality of a person. I am creating a visual world for the viewer to identify the personality of the people I choose. I feel my work is understood on two levels. There is the formal way of looking at it and a literary way. Once viewers understand the significance of what they are looking at in relation to the person being portrayed, my work is then experienced on a much deeper level.For me, the key to effective portraiture is to go beyond mere physical likeness. I’ve chosen familiar people as my sitters because I feel that it is necessary for me to really know a person to then be able to paint them in a way that a stranger can get an accurate idea of who they are. Through the use of collage, line, text, color, or symbols, I convey a fractured view into the psyche of a person. It allows me to combine literal elements with abstracted elements to create a psychological layering or juxtaposition of symbols, text, color in hopes of identifying their personality.
Biography: Born in Silver Spring, Md December 21, 1984 Raised in Germantown, Md Received Associate of Fine Arts Degree from Maryland College of Art and Design in 2004 Received Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree for Painting & Drawing from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia May, 2006 Moved to the Portland area of Maine in May, 2006 Began working at VSA arts of Maine as an Americorp*VISTA volunteer in August,2006
