I became involved in the art of origami over twenty years ago. A co-worker, an elderly Japanese lady, was folding cranes for her great-grand daughter. I asked Mrs. Hirada if she would teach me her art. She said: “Tumara yo bwing yor own pwaper”. I did and with her help I started this journey.
When I take a piece of paper and start folding, I know that I will be creating an original special piece of art for someone. I love doing cranes and kimonos because of what they symbolize. The crane means long and happy life and the kimono means prosper in work. I have had several people ask me if I studied in Japan because of my color sensibilities and my choice of patterns.
Each of my works is unique and like none other. On commission works I often interject materials that have special relevance to the client; thereby making these works all the more unique.
When someone purchases one of my pieces, I feel like I am contributing to their lives. It is my sincere hope and wish that having my art with the cranes and or kimonos will bring to them the good fortune they represent.
My inspirations really come from anything and everything around me and for that ability I am truly grateful.
