MEDIUM I have found my medium in oil paints. The vibrant color of the paints themselves draw me in, and the versatility of oils, the textures and consistency, the smell, the sensuality of the medium engages me more than any other medium ever could. THE PROCESS My paintings are reliant on design elements, shapes, composition, color, etc. Color is very instinctive for me and probably the quality of painting that draws me. I believe that the skillful application of color can bring the most universal appeal to a piece of art. There are no preliminary sketches or plans for the painting. My work progresses in stages, building up the surfaces in consecutive layers. I spontaneously choose colors and textures of the base layer. I usually press or rub the first layer colors into the canvas with a palette knife, piece of rag After the first layer dries a little, I apply another transparent layer over the first. More layers are painted over these foundation layers completely or in sections, sometimes later rubbed of in areas to allow the exposing foundation layer to shine through. Throughout the painting process, a nonverbal dialogue is improvised between me and the canvas. What is already on the canvas determines what is added to the canvas (or sometimes removed) Again color plays a major role in the process. When I wish to highlight a certain color, the rest hue of the painting is muted or earth toned which enhances a vivid, concentrated color Similar to a less is more technique used in more traditional styles. JEWELS SERIES I name not the object of jewels but the quality and richness that I enjoy in gemstones. Reflecting that quality. NON OBJECTIVE ART My paintings are best described as Non Objective or non representational. Non objective art doesn’t attempt to depict, a literal or visually re3cognizable object, figure or element in nature to express ideas or feelings. rather, objective art is based on abstract or idealized forms, such as geometric, mathematical or imaginary. and deals only with shapes, color and composition. When engaged in non objective art, the viewer tends to le be stirred by the movement of ideas in the unconscious mind even while thinking only mere colors, abstract shapes, texture. exists. We are inclined to seek out familiar shapes and objects. OR You might like an abstract painting a lot, but not know exactly why. or l art may still have the feel of a landscape or still-life, but it's focus is on the forms, colors, lines, textures, etc., that make up an image rather than a reference to our natural world.
Biography: After graduating from high school in rural upstate New York, I earned a BA in Liberal Arts in 1993 at Goddard College in Vermont, with an emphasis on photography and psychology. Self portraits. Later, I earned an MFA in Imaging Arts in 1997 at Rochester Institute of Technology. The MFA program emphasized Post-Modern art theory and the political in personal art. However, all of my work remained a personal expression of myself, usually in the form of video and installation. After all this education in art and its many mediums (photography, painting, installation, performance, video, digital, drawing), I have returned to one of my very first loves: oil painting.
