As a child, I loved drawing people and this passion has never ceased. What draws me is not only the physical form of the human figure, but the real person; connecting with the essence of the model conveyed through the eyes, the facial expressions, the body language.
I am equally inspired by nature’s immeasurable beauty; from vast open skies to lush tropical foliage; intricate textures found on corals and momentary patterns made by waves on a sandy beach have all been compelling sources of inspiration. Even everyday experiences of looking through the windshield of a car on a rainy day have transformed into visual references, reminding me that amid the mundane realities of the world we inhabit, there is a realm of beauty for the seekers.
Creating art is often a contemplative experience. I do not commit to any one medium, rather I let the subject determine the medium which will convey my emotional response to it. Exploring the medium is very much a part of how the work evolves and the style that emerges is the natural outcome of thought, perception and interpretation fused with the material.
When illustrating for children's books, it is words that stimulate the imagination and the ensuing process is a surprise that unfolds itself. Delving into my own childhood fantasies, I love creating pictures that transports the reader to a different world. Chalk pastel is my favorite medium for children's books for the way it lends itself to creating a richly layered, vibrant and dreamy feel. I also use digital media to create imagery where the hands-on artwork is the foundation but the digital element creates a new dimension.
My artistic mission is to continually express my perception and appreciation of beauty in all its forms. Piet Mondrian said it best:
“ The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel.”
