If we consider movement or dance in their most basic form, they stand for nothing else but an instinct or a natural means of expression by which men communicated or exchanged their thoughts and emotions between themselves through time.
I have always been fascinated by ballet and acrobatics: wide spaces... bodies in movement, in the moment of establishing balance ... on the trapeze... in the act of juggling... bodies which float without any support at intervals free from Earth's gravity. Movements defined by the shape of the body, the lenght of ligaments, the force of the muscles and elasticity .
What I am particulary interested in are the movements which happen against all the laws of flexibility of human skeleton and joints, as if they practically did not exist. Legs and feet strained to improve the balance... While straining they twist the hip, which in its turn affects the position of the spine. Ballet dancers and acrobats perform them automatically, with no reflection, and in doing so they bring all the parts of their bodies into an extraordinarily harmonious balance. The moments in which they jump into the air, perform complex movements while still in the air, and, equally balancing the weight of their bodies, they land on their feet - the foundations for balancing and support of the body.
My goal is to capture the moment of balance or the point of support in which the body touches the surface, or perhaps the momentum by which it performs its acrobatics in the air.
Ballerinas on theatrical stages...
Acrobats in the moment of performing acrobatics underneath spacious circus tents...
Spotlights directing their way ...
Such an atmosphere contributes to the sense of the infinity of space on a stage or in an arena, but then again, this infinity of space contributes to the existence of a body in it, its performance, its movement. The same happens with the sculpture. Sculpture is not enough on its own. It only begins its life in a space, only in space the third dimension comes completely into the focus. Plastic masses spreading themselves into the space...
What I am interested in is the essential, the whole without description, with details present in their meaning in order to contribute to the movement, the concrete and the essence. The force of expression. Male figures with broadened shoulders, prolongued legs - propellants which lift the body into the air, and soften the thump when it comes back to the ground. Female figures, also with long emphasized legs, round bulging stomacks, narrow shoulders and arms, and small-size heads. Reduced to the basic figures of ball, cone and cylinder in a forceful movement, during the acrobatics in the air, balancing on the rope, landing, after a jump - thinking about a male, thinking about the female and up to a part, feminine, thinking about the body, ripeness, maturity, motherhood, birth, life, about the uncertainty of life...
