I like to concentrate detailed information in the "negative" space in my work- layering watercolor paintings on top of drawings on top of white on white collages and embroidery. This creates layers of information that reflect the vast amount of images I am influenced by.
I enjoy having restful areas of negative space that are not really empty. Finding places in nature devoid of human activity is becoming increasingly more difficult. Therefore, the negative spaces in the pieces are cluttered with billboards and grocery carts faintly drawn in, but ever present.
My work focuses on the struggle between human industry and development with the survival of our natural environment. The watercolor images are from "high-end" magazines and catalogs-replicated in the finest detail. These images reflect all the advertising that pushes these unnecessary (yet totally yummy) products into our lives-enticing us to consume just a little bit more.
