I am a sculptor and installation artist working in a variety of media such as rubber, metal, wax, and wool. While I have always been interested in materials and process, conceptually I'm currently interested in exploring how contemporary society’s values, desires, and obsessions affect our bodies and our environment. The images here come from two bodies of work: the rubber series and the installation "an exercise in domesticity".
The work that I have created out of used bicycle inner tubes is constructed through the repetitive act of cutting, twisting, and coiling, along with the obsessive accumulation of parts and forms. This series is ongoing, and I am currently working on combining the tubes with sheets of slit black rubber. Through this series I am exploring the themes of transformation, mutation, and growth, as well as the ideas of recycling and rejection.
The installation "an exercise in domesticity" came out of my interest in body image and contemporary culture's obsession with beauty and perfection. Intertwined with this are the ideas of sexuality, fertility, and reproduction, as well as an exploration into the ways in which humans try to control or manipulate both their own bodies and their surroundings. With the idea of control in mind, I incorporated forms and materials that are both organic and manmade in order to suggest and question the interaction and relationship between science and nature.
