My name is George Comninos, I am a Sydney based painter/printmaker and graduate of the National Art School, Sydney Australia. I am not a fan of long winded and pretentious artists statements (quite often written in the third person by the artists themselves). Work should mostly speak for itself and resonate at least on some level (hopefully if you are reading this it’s because you are in some way engaged by the work). This statement is not the meaning of the work, it is ideas surrounding the creation of the images, that may deepen their appreciation. It is to these ends that I write this short spiel. Much of my work starts around the universal idea of family. The passing of time and its effects on family memories is explored. Nostalgia and transience are also abiding themes. I am of mixed Greek/Dutch heritage and my long suffering wife is Thai, so cultural differences and similarities fascinate as well. Quite often photos gleaned from old family albums are used to start an image or are assimilated into an image. The stories behind these photographs is quite often a mystery, allowing me to create a fantasy narrative. New life is breathed into old images.
Biography: George Comninos is of mixed Dutch/Greek descent. A graduate of the National Art School (Fine Arts) and the University of Technology Sydney (Graduate Diploma of Education). In his former life (BA-BEFORE ART) he was a ships Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy and Graduate from the Australian Maritime College Launceston (ADMR). He is presently desperately seeking employment as a high school art teacher!
