Gyatso's work explores the fabric of Tibetan culture and identity as it undergoes changes that are often beyond the control of its society today. He engages with the intersection of the spiritual and physical, drawing inspiration from pre-Buddhist and Buddhist worldviews and symbols such as those in the Shang Shung rock art of Tibet. Although his work deals with core ideas that have been an inherent part of traditional Tibetan culture, Gyatso's work has a focus, narrative and a visual style that is very much in the moment.
Biography: Gyatso was born in Tibet and has lived in India, Britain and the US. He studied at the San Francisco Academy of Art and has worked in design, advertising, films and created two of the finest Tibetan restaurants in the US. For the last twenty years, he has also pursued an interest in making paintings that describe his relationship with Tibetan culture and traditional worldviews as a person who has lived in exile for most of his life. In 2002 he started Mechak Center for contemporary Tibetan art www.mechak.org), as a way of creating a community of Tibetan artists and to bring their work to a wider Tibetan and world audience.
