Ian's drawings and paintings are an investigation into mark making through both physical and emotional expression and are figurative in unexpected ways. Within the marks, eyes appear which are seen as a boundary between the soul and the outside world. These eyes, along with semi abstract figures call for a closer inspection of the surface, where the viewer is treated to more intimate marks and subtleties created by layers of paint, varnishes and charcoal.
Torn paper is used as a stencil to create space by cutting out a section of the painting. Areas are also torn away, revealing previous layers. This use of torn paper brings with it the idea of fragmentation. The drawing element is important in this work, allowing for a raw and more real feeling of liberation through mark making to come across.
