My current area of interest is sand casted glass. I first make a mold from a mixture of moist sand and clay. Molten glass heated to 2300° F is gathered from the furnace in a large cast iron ladle and poured into the sand mold. Various glass and metal inclusions may be added to the work while the glass is still in a molten liquid state in the mold. When the piece cools into a solid state at about 1200° it is pried out of the sand mold with wooden paddles and placed into an annealing oven for up to several days to slowly cool to room temperature. My sand casted work frequently involves incorporating sand casted glass sculpture with found object such as old tools, farm implements or even old metal bedpans!
I find unlimited possibilities in objects that have served their useful lives and have been discarded or relegated to garage sales and flea markets. To embellish these with sand casted glass forms causes them to take on new meaning entirely. Some of my work deals with serious themes such as capital punishment, and others may be entirely humorous or satirical. Others may be simply decorative. The found object tells me what it wishes to become. I like the viewer to place his or her own interpretation on them, and I am delighted when someone suggests a meaning in them that never occurred to me.
