Biography: Lye :
22 12 1972
lye discovered very early in his life that the creative pursuits offered the path that he would walk and would suit him best. with practicing artists in his family spanning the generations, it was a choice that was not hard to make, and with a talent that was both recognized and nurtured from this early age, there seemed no other option than to embrace this path.
with an early grounding in disciplines as diverse as wood carving, oil painting, ceramics and photography, the young lye developed his own style and philosophy, grounded in the core belief that there are no boundaries separating these or any of the creative disciplines.
inspired greatly by 15th century masters and 1960’s poster art; the former being introduced to him by his artist grandmother, and the latter of which would direct him towards study and work in the field of graphic design. Eventually working for some time in the mid nineties as a layout artist for a magazine in london.
however, the advancing technology and the ever increasing removal of ‘hands on’ craft in this discipline saw lye return from living in the city, and through a series of chance conversations and meetings found himself re-training at swansea institute’s prestigious course in architectural stained glass, where his passions had the opportunity to flourish in this age old medium, and a world of new possibilities again opened up before him.
since graduating in 2002, lye has been working constantly alongside prominent artists in the field of glass design as part of a team of artists; developing, creating and installing many successful public art projects in the uk, aswell as establishing his own business where he has developed his own unmistakable style. pushing the boundaries of what is possible with pieces of broken glass and melted metal, challenging the common perception of what ‘stained glass’ is . . . and exploring the possibilities of what ‘stained glass’ can be.
