The complex patterns and vibrant colors found in Japanese Koi fish serve as my main inspiration for my current work. Growing up by the ocean, having a fish pond in my backyard, and being raised by a father who is an avid fisherman; is greatly responsible for my interest in fish and water as components in my subject matter. Fish represent a large part of my childhood and have always been visually stimulating to me.
My compositions usually display the Koi swimming through the water and emerging through the water’s surface in groups or schools as they would in nature. Besides the actual Koi, the water is extremely important to the paintings. The interaction between the solidity of the fish and the fluidity of the water creates a visible distortion that I capture through my color and marks. I use photos and work by nature painter Joseph Raffael as my main references, however the distorted patterns I paint are created from my imagination.
I generally work with the local color of the fish but am more adventurous when it comes to the water. Because water is actually colorless I invent the color whether it be stereotypically blue or every color on my palette. Painting water gives me the freedom to invent colors I’ve never seen before and they do not necessarily have to be accurate according to nature. Also within my paintings I use various senses of touch with my brush. Often parts of my paintings are painted differently using numerous kinds of brushstrokes and thickness of paint. This is particularly evident when I am distinguishing between the fish and the water using my hand and brush.
