Biography: A self-taught professional artist, Martin began drawing in 1995. Since then he has enjoyed growing success. Martin has no formal qualifications, but although self-taught he learns from and is inspired by, many wildlife artists. Martin has exhibited with numerous art societies, and won the acclaim of his peers and members of the public.
His initial drawings being of The Beatles, Martin quickly moved onto drawing wildlife - inspired by the work of Gary Hodges, the UK's leading wildlife artist. Gary's views on Martin's work can be found on the comments page. Also a keen photographer, Martin’s own photography is the basis for much of his work.
Martin is a member of Marwell International Wildlife Art Society (MIWAS), the largest wildlife art society in Europe, and through his association with organisations like this, Martin's work is becoming highly collectable as he continues to work closely with several conservation charities, raising money through sales of original drawings & limited edition prints.
"In each drawing I do, I try to give an insight into the personality and character of the subject - I believe this to be essential for wildlife artwork to be a success".
He regards his drawings as a huge commitment and some take hundreds of hours and several months to complete. One - a study of a chimpanzee - took 768 hours before he finally called it a day.
"My work is highly detailed. I try to achieve as near photographic quality as possible, working layer by layer, inch by inch, gradually compiling detail over hundreds of hours - Obviously this method is very time consuming & hard work at times, but I believe the end product justifies the time & effort I put into it".
His work is much sought after because of the attention to detail and the great sense of realism, the likes of which can surely only be matched by his greatest influence - Gary Hodges
2006 was the year that saw Martin release his first range of limited edition prints, which are now available both via the Internet and exhibitions countrywide throughout 2006 & beyond!
