The artist, Mary-Margaret Marx, uses oil, acrylic, ink, pencil, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and mixed media. Styles represented include abstract, contemporary, cubist, expressionism, and traditional.
Biography: Her parents taught her to draw and to appreciate art when she was very young. From these early experiences grew an obsession with the visual image which she has followed to the present. Marx took college level art classes and private lessons from various art teachers. Always on the outside of the mainstream she has made her own way both in her art and in her life. From the beginning of her career she felt drawn to both realistic and abstract painting. Always curious about color and texture and the interaction of the two, she has experimented with various medium including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, ink, stained glass, and crayons. She attended Loyola University of Chicago for two years majoring in Communications and Theatre. She transferred to Northeastern Illinois University and after one year received her bachelors degree in Speech and Performing Arts. While she worked at the Chicago Board Options Exchange and then in a private family business, she exhibited her art at various studios and galleries throughout northern Illinois. Marx withdrew from the contemporary art scene for some years to reflect on her life and its direction. She wanted to find a new direction but could find no clues in contemporary art and had to make her own way. She had always loved horses and decided to learn more about them and began riding. Marx was always interested in Egyptian and Renaissance art styles. She traveled widely and became deeply interested in the art of the Southwest. While visiting art museums across the United States and in Europe, she studied modern art especially the works of Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Odilon Redon, and Henri Rousseau. All of this has lead to a profound influence in her work. In 1997, she moved to northern Illinois and started painting again. From then on she has been forging her own way of making and looking at images. She was intrigued by the computer and the manipulation of images and graphics. This has lead to her pursuing degrees in java, visual basic, microcomputer applications, web design, philosophy, and technical writing at the College of Lake County, Grayslake, Illinois. She is currently working on a graduate degree in Workforce Education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois.
