ARTIST PROFILE
Maree Guenole b. Wellington
"Contemporary and traditional are two dichotomies in "modern" life that my work mediates upon. I am drawn to classical and modern forms and try to centre the practice of my work on evolving the two together in synthesis to create a dialogue in my environment."
Maree Guenole works in Tamakimakaurau/Auckland producing paintings inspired by Tongan art and culture, drawing upon life in contemporary Aotearoa/New Zealand and Asia; a favourite travel destination.
"My practice has developed mostly alone although I have worked in studios with groups of arts practitioners observing and developing my art since 1997."
My perspective on art is that it should be viewed within the cultural context in which it is created and that which the artist exists. Art is based on our experiences and opportunity to practice it, there is no objective truth only our experiences which colour how we perceive ourselves and our environment.
I continue to evolve my creative practice.
