Russell's practice focuses around his association with childhood memories, and how they relate to the suburban landscape of Coventry.
Abbott depict scenes which are isolated from life, distant from any sign of existence returning and subtracted to core information.
The scenes go through an editing process from source material, to drawing, to finished oil painting. This is a fundamental process of Russell's practice, thus allowing him to subtract any signs of human life and give the scenes the sense of loneliness and emptiness, which is how they are portrayed. These are places where time has forgotten, places were memories are reflected upon. Russell knows every scene personally, having analysed every landscape since his childhood. Change is a natural part of human activity but the apparent lack of activity suggests the unwarranted procedure of change. The essence of uncertainly runs in parallel to the lack of activity.
The support material has become an essential part of Russell's practice, in particular the use of man-made materials. The use of materials such as sheet metal and MDF, have allowed him to generate a link between the support material and an industry city such as Coventry. The applicant of paint on the material has become a fundamental element of his painting; by applying oil paint in a thin approach Russell is able to allow the patterned surface material to obtain a level of transparency through the paint. This gives intensity far superior then what could achieve through other surface materials.
