I make art, just like the thousands of other artists in the world. What do I say in my work? What does my work say? That is for the viewer to answer. All art speaks to each individual in a different way.
Biography: Ruth Robertson is well known in the Washington Metropolitan Area for her figurative works. Her sensuous interpretation of the figure has become a hallmark of her work. Although best known for her black and white photographs of nudes she is also well known for her mixed media works and paintings. Her work has received critical acclaim in the Mid-Atlantic region where it has been heavily exhibited, and is highly sought by collectors worldwide. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the James E. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, MD, the Santos Cultural Institute, Sao Paolo, Brazil, and The CID Collection in Sao Paolo, Brazil..
Private collectors throughout the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Switzerland have purchased Robertson’s work. District West Fine Art in the Washington, DC area, represents her and her work is available through The Gallery On Broadway in Ft. Myer, FL. Robertson has exhibited her work at The Museum Of Contemporary Art in DC, where the museum hosted a solo exhibition of her work. Her photographs were exhibited in Havana, Cuba, from July - November of 2002. Her latest series “In Conversation With Alesso Baldovinetti” was discussed on Washington, DC’s public television station, WETA, program Around Town in July 2002. She has been nominated twice for the Whitney Biennial, once in 1997 for the 1998 biennial and again in 1999 for the 2000 biennial.
Ruth Robertson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She spent two years in West Germany pursuing her art studies from 1970- 1972. Ms. Robertson is a former art teacher. Her last teaching position was at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, VA. Early in her career she taught in the Fairfax County, Virginia public school system.
In 1998 she left her teaching position to work full time as a studio artist. In May of 2001 she purchased half interest in District West Fine Art, an art gallery located in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. Besides directing the art gallery and curating two exhibitions monthly she also developed two websites. The first is www.districtwestart.com, an award-winning site that promotes the gallery. The second is a site dedicated to the fine art of the figure. This site is www.absolutenudes.com. Artists exhibited on this site are selected by Ruth Robertson and have the opportunity to show and sell their work through the site. Ruth Robertson lives and maintains a studio in the Washington, DC area of the United States. She is a listed artist.
