Shaun James Nielsen

I have always enjoyed drawing and painting. I grew up in an environment where painting was not considered a practical way to make a living. Even now I feel that I have to defend the point that being an artist is not really a priviledge, or easy way out - not a field for only black-clad-depressive-spontaneously-inspired souls; it is a job, to be learned systematically and then practiced regularly. As an artist, one works more or less independently, the regular and continous commitment to producing work is as necessary as in all other types of jobs. That may sound a little dry, but the principle or example I try to impart to my students is this, 'The same as in life, you choose what you want to do and go about doing it.' I paint in oils exclusively and work in a technique called alla prima (wet on wet painting) mixing the colours as I put them on canvas. I don't have anything else to say about my process or even themes for the inspirations that I receive as I believe that committing these things to words somehow narrows my creative abilities and the reception of my work.
