I accept the notion of uncertainty and the intention of refinement. My concepts revolve around the interactions between organic and geometric shapes. These concepts are investigated through a deep commitment to the aspects of the modernist tradition. What I find most intriguing are the figure to ground relationships present in abstract painting, and the interaction between forms themselves and their struggle for existence within the space they occupy. Working within traditional elements such as line, color, process and form, I set out to achieve aesthetically pleasing and believable work. Things in reality are constantly changing; therefore, my paintings must undergo a series of changes before they themselves can become real. This process accentuates the presence of immediacy, and allows a sense of intimacy for both the viewer and myself. Constantly striving for new forms, colors, compositions and never settling for the most apparent solutions, prevent the surfaces from being contrived, and give the forms presence. When painting and drawing I try not to limit myself by over analyzing and ascribing undue “meaning” to my work. I am simply working within my process to achieve believable forms and resolve spatial issues. Every line or shape does not need to represent some specific thing. Instead, the line or shape is merely another element that belongs to a greater cause, something that either enhances or disrupts the end result. Richard Diebenkorn stated, “The pretty, initial position which falls short of completeness is not to be valued – except as a stimulus for further moves.” Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Edward Hopper, Hans Hofmann, and Jim Dine are some of the artists whose passion and commitment in their exploration of formal qualities and techniques have instilled me with vast amounts of knowledge, and continue to guide me to new solutions.
