After several years experimenting with the possibilities of oil paint, Susan Flockhart began to train in the practical techniques of the old masters, learning to build up a painting in stages with layers of traditional pigments and glazes and working with oils and egg tempera on hand-prepared gesso panels. Her website includes step-by-step images showing the evolution of her paintings. She is based in London, UK.
Biography: Studied at Harrogate Art College, followed by History of Art at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Since the late 90s, I have been painting primarily in oils. In recent years I have undertaken practical training in the studio of Dr David Cranswick, a specialist in the traditional techniques of the old masters. In David’s studio I have had the opportunity to learn time-honoured skills such as grinding historic pigments, cooking up glazes and building up a painting in layers, using egg tempera and oils. I also like to attend short courses at the Royal Academy and other venues.
