I am just coming up to the end of my fifth year of university and am on course to get a 2.1 MEng in Structural Engineering and Architecture. Whilst completing my degree I started using Google Sketchup and Bryce 5, to model and render my architectural designs, and discovered my true passion lies in 3D modelling. Although Sketchup is a comparatively simple modelling program, compared to Maya or 3DStudio Max, I believe I excel in using it and have used it to create some quite complicated models. I am currently looking to expand my modelling skills and have started using Autodesk’s Maya and recently attended Escape Studio’s VFX learning day to kick start my abilities. Although I would love to attend one of their full courses I do not think it is financially viable coming straight from university.
Outside of work and education I am an avid gamer, playing computer games, poker and Magic: the Gathering. Having only recently updated my computer means I have just started playing computer games again and focus mainly on first person shooters, RPG’s and real time strategies. In poker I am a small stakes player but generally make a small profit and have managed to make about ?1000 a year for the last couple of years by playing online. Magic: the Gathering is a collectable card game by Wizards of the Coast and another passion of mine. I regard myself as one of the countries better players and have played all over the world, from LA to Sydney, and have been both the English National Champion and runner up in previous years.
Due to my architectural background I feel that I would be perfectly suited to environmental and background modelling for computer games although I am also interested in moving into character modelling and animation. My experience with computer games and the artwork of Magic has given me a broad range of fantasy and sci-fi knowledge which I draw upon often in my work.
