ORGANOOMPHS
In the current series of oil paintings, male and female characters are
engaged in a bizarre battle of the sexes in which macabre, but often
cynically humorous rituals are enacted. These characters embody a goofy
morphism of figurines drawn as much from ancient Greek and Roman mythology as they are from contemporary urban street graffiti , as much from sexual doodles as they are from political cartoons - like Al Capp on acid.
These 'toons' reflect the sexual terrorist mind-set flourishing in a
post-feminist society that was born of a decade of shock and excess in our
art and in our social order. They are less a political comment than they are a nightmare record of our scalded national psyche. Nevertheless, the seemingly morbid obsession with body parts, blood and guts, also effects the strange childlike quality of a coloring book simplicity and clarity. As in the Medieval Masque, these caricatures are distortions of stock personnae who perform with predictable outcomes. The heritage of The Doctor Via-Great and Suzycreamcheeze prefigures Punch and Judy but the content of their message is clearly serious and the emotions evoked are much less trivial.
