Identifying Fulfillment
Laura Woermke
We like to think that we each have a “story” to tell, a linear progression through life. But what if there is no story? Or, what if our story is simply an invention, not a reflection of ‘truth’, but an arbitrary collection of shifting memories and items? What if the past is a dream and the future never arrives? How then do we know who we are? Through my work I will investigate these questions, pouring over them, searching for meaning, with some foundation in the elements of what brings meaning and fulfillment to our lives.
A great deal of my art springs from the documentation of external items that bring gratification to oneself. ‘Story’ implies narrative structure. Using the human form I wish to investigate the many situations of fulfillment. For the Female this can sexual, body manipulation, marriage, and as simple as a good bra.
We need stories, and to tell stories, because we need them to define ourselves, to serve as a lens through which we understand, conceive and create our lives. Without them we would simply disappear.
